A vintage jewelry piece is generally classified as one with over 25 years of history. Vintage rings are dated through careful examination of their stylistic and technical features. For instance, Art Deco era (1920’s-30’s) engagement rings focused on geometry, contrast and precision, while earlier Victorian era (1837-1901) rings were characterized by floral motifs, clustering and fine filigree technique. A vintage engagement ring hence reflects the aesthetics and values of eras past.

Vintage engagement rings were fully handcrafted, often with limited tools. Hence, no two pieces are completely identical. The vintage ring on your finger is the culmination of dozens of hours of labor and much thought.

Vintage jewelry is also a sustainable and ethical option. Most engagement rings are made of durable materials, and buying vintage ensures the recycling of these materials on a new owner’s finger, instead of having to source new natural materials from the limited stock on earth. Mining causes irreversible damage to the earth, and buying vintage reduces that harm.

While it is undeniably tempting to buy vintage, keep in mind that not all pieces with the word “vintage” in the title are actually vintage. “Vintage style” refers to a newly crafted ring that is inspired by a vintage design. Some inexperienced jewelers may also falsely recognize pieces not yet ready for the “vintage” title as “vintage.” When searching for vintage items, it is important to find a reliable jeweler.
